ачалото на интернет като световна мрежа е една романтична епоха в историята на компютрите. В тази статия ще ви разкажем как започна всичко и как се разви. Чрез проследяване на паметните събития ще забележите бързата динамика и развитието на глобалната мрежа, която днес свързва почти цялата потребителска електроника. Историята е изключително любопитна, затова и си заслужава да я разкажем.

Всичко започва с ARPANET

ARPANET е била използвана като тест за нова технология, която се нарича „packet switching“. При нея информацията се предава на малки парчета, „packets“, така че да бъдат бързо и безпроблемно предавани през мрежата.

Всичко започва през далечната 1958 г., когато американският президент Айзенхауър сформира ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) в отговор на пускането на „Спутник“ от страна на СССР. ARPA е специализирано звено към Министерството на отбраната, което се заема с проучване, създаване и усъвършенстване на високотехнологични средства в полза на американските военни.

ARPANET е първата компютърна мрежа, която агенцията създава. Проектът стартира през 1966 г., когато започва и самото му планиране.

На този етап ARPANET не е имала комерсиални цели, а е била предназначена за по-ефикасното използване на ограничените компютърни ресурси. Учените, които са били част от ARPA, са използвали бюджета на агенцията за закупуване на нова техника, надявайки се, че ARPANET ще позволи свързването на повечето университети в САЩ и ще споделянето на изчислителните възможности на машините.
През 1968 г. се подписва договор между ARPA и Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc. (BBN) за създаването на IMP – специален компютър, който да маршрутизира данните в мрежата. Първите спецификации и първият IMP се създават година по-късно заедно (1969 г.). Това бележи и първият възел в мрежата ARPANET. Заедно с тях се обособява и специализиран център за мониторинг на мрежата, който има за цел да оценява работата на ARPANET, както и да събира и обработва статистическа информация. По всичко личи, че мрежата вече започва да добива сериозна организация.

Първоначалните връзки са били между машините на Университета в Юта и три научни центъра в Калифорния.

1970 г. е паметна за развитието на ARPANET. През месец март мрежата вече свързва по-голяма част от територията на САЩ. Започва работата на Мрежови контролен център, който следи непрекъснато трафика и състоянието на възлите. През ноември софтуерът на всички IMP се обновява, позволявайки им взаимно да се обновяват през мрежата. При дадено софтуерно обновление на един IMP, то автоматично се инсталира и на останалите. Това е възможност, която ние считаме за елементарна и задължителна за днешните времена, но тогава е било истинска крачка напред в развитието на технологиите. През тази година започва да се създава и изкуствено натоварване между свързаните компютри, за да се тества стабилността на цялата ARPANET.

Първите масови програмни продукти за работа в мрежа се създават и разпространяват през 1971-1972 г. Възниква популярният протокол за трансфер на данни FTP и електронната поща. Тогава е осъществена и първата публична демонстрация на Международната конференция за компютърна комуникация във Вашингтон.

През 1973 г. ARPANET излиза от територията на САЩ и става международна мрежа чрез създаването на сателитна връзка, която свързва Норвегия и Лондон към възела в САЩ. Хавай също се присъединява чрез сателитна връзка към американската мрежа. По това време APRANET има около 40 възли, които свързват различни територии.

ARPANET продължава да се разраства териториално през следващите години, стигайки до втория голям подем през 1982 г. През тази година мрежата вече има около 100 възела, които свързват основно големите университети. Тази сериозна експанзия позволява и възникването на голямо свързано общество от учени и академичен състав, които заедно да работят върху своите задачи. За първи път се създава глобална свързана мрежа, която позволява ефективното ползване на ресурсите не само на компютри, но и на личен състав.

Ражда се USENET – предшественикът на популярните днес дискусионни форуми. USENET позволява създаването на форуми и отделни теми, където потребителите могат да споделят своята информация, както и да обменят файлове.

На 1 януари 1983 г. ARPANET започва да използва новия протокол TCP/IP, който коренно променя работата на мрежата. TCP/IP позволява на ARPANET да съществува и като децентрализирана мрежа, което улеснява обединяването на множество малки мрежи и осигурява възможност за самостоятелно съществуване. Тази стъпка е особено важна в развитието на ARPANET, тъй като ускорява значително нейното разрастване. Програмите за получаване и изпращане на файлове и електронна поща продължават да работят безпроблемно след въвеждането на TCP/IP, така че потребителите не са усетили разлика.

Една от първите по-големи мрежи, които се присъединяват, е CSNET. Тя се финансира от Националната фондация за наука и свързва факултетите по компютърни науки в страната.

През 1986 г. Националната мрежа за наука учредява няколко центъра с мощни суперкомпютри в различни места на територията на САЩ. Те се свързват в мрежа, която те наричат NSFNET, позволяваща на учените да използват ефективно ресурсите на мощните компютри. Но мрежата не е ограничена само за ползване на изчислителната мощност, а осигурява достъп и за най-различни други академични цели. В резултат на това NSFNET се превръща в „гръбнака“ на мрежата. Неговата част е да осигури високоскоростна свързаност, от която да се възползват останалите мрежи, които са свързани в рамките на ARPANET. Училища и университети, които не са били свързани към голямата мрежа, са създавали малки свои локални мрежи, които в последствие са се свързвали помежду си и оттам към най-близкия възел на NSFNET. Това е позволило на студентите в компютърните зали да имат достъп до електронната поща, USENET и най-новото достижение на технологията – World Wide Web (WWW). През 1990 г. ARPANET официално се влива в глобалната мрежа Интернет.

Тази дата става известна в историята на интернет като дебюта на Web (или още WWW или W3) като публична услуга. Изобретението на Бърнърс-Лий завинаги променя начина, по който ползваме интернет и става едно от основните средства за достъп до информация.

Съвременното интернет пространство нямаше да бъде същото, ако през 1989 г. Тим Бърнърс-Лий не бе написал предложение за създаването на WWW (World Wide Web). Неговата идея е да се направи система, която да свързва документи с хипертекст, които да бъдат достъпни чрез специализиран софтуер (уеб браузър). Тези документи могат да съдържат текст, изображения, видео файлове и друго мултимедийно съдържание. Текстът на неговото предложение окончателно се завършва през 1990 г., а официалното представяне се прави на 6 август 1991 г.

С течение на времето интернет започва да става едно глобално цяло и добива гражданственост, което променя изписването с малка буква. През 1994 г. администрацията на президента Клинтън позволява приватизацията на голяма част от интернет. Големите фирми започват да закупуват част от по-големите възли, което дава възможност мрежата да се разширява и поддържа по-добре. Големите мрежи започват да се разрастват много бързо и да се свързват взаимно, давайки възможност на своите клиенти да се свържат и от домашните си компютри. Започва подготовката за създаване на условия за интернет достъп на домакинствата.

През 2000 г. почти половината американски граждани вече имат достъп до глобалната мрежа. С всяка изминала година все повече домакинства по света започват да имат връзка към интернет. Интернет става универсално средство за комуникация и помага за развитието не само на информационните технологии, но и за обособяването на ново поколение от хора, които днес наричаме digital natives – израснали в мрежата.

Разрастването на интернет и WWW предизвиква и голямото развитие на технологичната индустрия, която започва да изгражда и своето сериозно присъствие в новата глобална мрежа. Започва развитието и на различни технологии, които да направят Web още по-иновативна. Индустрията вече се намира в бързо развиваща се среда – постоянно се появяват нови протоколи, стандарти и различни приложения, които предизвикват истински бум в развитието на интернет.

За повече контрол и организация съществуват няколко основни групи, които контролират интернет технологиите и следят тяхното развитието

Internet Society (ISOC)

– Организация, която има за цел да стимулира интереса към интернет. Тя организира IAB (Internet Architecture Board) – група от доброволци, които създават политики за качеството на интернет стандартите.

Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)

– Група, която следи стандартите според конкретните области на протоколите и целия интернет като цяло. Всяка област има отделен мениджър, който контролира работните групи.

Internet Research Task Force (IRTF)

– Група, която работи върху изследователските проекти, които са свързани с протоколите и интернет.

За развитието на WWW от голямо значение е работата на W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) – международна организация, която разработва отворените стандарти в мрежата.

Технологиите на TCP/IP протоколите са свободни за достъп под формата на документи, които са озаглавени като Запитвания за коментари (RFC). Тези запитвания съдържат стандартите, към които трябва да се придържат всички производители на хардуер и програмисти, за да могат техните разработки да работят в интернет. Те описват функциите, правилата и начина на работа на протоколите. RFC са във вид на доклади, които се подготвят от комитети, организации или отделни лица и се номерират по хронологичен ред.

Интернет превзема света

21 век започва с навлизането на Мрежата с главно „М“, която свързва не само нашите компютри, но и целия ни живот. Развиват се явления, които до този момент са били в измеренията на популярната научна фантастика.

Бизнес организациите започват да откриват свои сайтове, портали и дори да разполагат работата си в онлайн пространството. Възможността за отдалечен достъп до работното място чрез мрежата позволява по-висока гъвкавост и производителност на работата, което е в огромен плюс на работодателите. Трансферът на данни и електронната поща стават обичайно явление, а истинският бум на „виртуални“ компании създава и предпоставки за висок икономически напредък.

Първата успешна търсеща машина е Lycos, която е създадена през 1993 г. По това време основните начини за търсене на информация са онлайн директориите, които представляват категорийни списъци с уеб адреси. С разрастването на броя на адресите обновяването и поддържането на тези директории става все по-трудно и в крайна сметка търсещите машини започват да ги изместват. Появата на Google и неговият алгоритъм за релевантно търсене изцяло променя начина на работа на потребителите, а търсачката става един от най-популярните сайтове.

По отношение на образованието повечето държави успешно започват да развиват програми за осигуряване на свързаност на училищните и университетските компютри към интернет. Въвежда се обучение по информационни технологии и информатика в училище, с което учениците се въвличат в новата среда. Големите корпорации спонсорират мащабни проекти, които подпомагат развитието на интернет и свързаността по света.

По-лесният достъп до интернет сред домакинствата дава възможност и за създаването на съвършено нов вид потребителска електроника – т.нар. „умни“ уреди. За първи път идеите за свързване на домашните уреди и популярните джаджи не са просто фантастика. Появата на първите лаптопи с много опции за лесна връзка с интернет, смартфоните и таблетите се приема от потребителите като естествена стъпка напред. Светът след смартфоните вече е тотално различен от този преди 2000 г.

Съвременни предизвикателства

Интернет изисква всяко свързано устройство в интернет да разполага със собствен IP (Internet Protocol) адрес. За да се координират мрежите и IP адресите в глобалната мрежа, те се разделят в 5 географски зони. Всяка зона има назначени няколкостотин милиона IP адреса, които влизат в нея. По стечение на обстоятелствата оригиналният план да се използват IPv4 адреси, които са общо около няколко милиарда, започва да се изчерпва. Поради доближаване на капацитета на статуквото международните организации решават да се мигрира към нов стандарт, който се нарича IPv6. Той позволява много повече адреси, които могат да се разпределят сред желаещите машини в глобалната мрежа. От няколко години насам тече бърза миграция към IPv6, която вече е задължителна в много части от света.

Интернационализация на домейните

Лесното сърфиране в интернет в голяма степен се дължи на системата DNS. Тя позволява преобразуване на IP адресите в интернет в букви, които завършват с определен домейн. Буквените и цифрените комбинации улесняват значително запомнянето на адресите в интернет, а домейните служат за получаване на по-подробна информация (в повечето случаи) за предназначението на съответния сайт. Така че вместо да пишете 173.194.44.34 в адреса на вашия браузър, можете просто да напишете www.google.com и той автоматично ще използва DNS сървъра на вашия доставчик, за да стигнете до желания адрес. С времето се появяват все повече домейни, някои от които напоследък са много популярни (.eu за сайтове, регистрирани в Европейския съюз и новият .xxx за порнографско съдържание). През месец октомври 2009 г. ICANN (организацията, която отговаря за разпределянето на домейните) одобрява създаването на международни домейни. С това се отбелязва и началото на възможността за изписване на домейни на различни азбуки, включително арабски, кирилица, гръцки и др. Примери за такива домейн са .рф за Руската федерация, .新加坡 за Сингапур и др.

Потребителите на интернет в развитите географски райони (Северна Америка, Европа и Азия) се радват на бърза и стабилна връзка към мрежата, но това не е така по целия свят. Не навсякъде достъпът се извършва чрез фиксирани кабелни или оптични връзки. Например в Египет около 2.7% от потребителите разполагат с традиционния за нас широколентов достъп до мрежата, а 10 пъти повече от тях използват мобилен интернет. Мобилният интернет, макар и по-бавен, може да бъде много по-ефикасен, когато става въпрос за разпространение на по-голяма територия. В държави като Япония, Южна Корея и Швеция има повече регистрирани абонаментни планове, отколкото хора, тъй като потребителите използват по няколко устройства, които имат постоянна свързаност. Скоростта също е доста по-различна в различните региони. Най-бързият достъп до интернет традиционно е наличен в Азия и Европа. Разликите с някои африкански държави могат да бъдат драматични, ако се приложи сравнение.

Все още съществуват не малък брой държави, които имат силно ограничени връзки с останалия свят и при инцидент или нареждане целият интернет достъп би могъл да бъде спрян. През 2013 г. най-големият сирийски град Алепо изчезва от интернет за няколко часа заради военния конфликт. Южната част на Сирия получава достъпа чрез наземна линия, която се свързва към възел в Турция. Не е ясно дали причината за липсата на достъп се дължи на повреда, причинена от военните атаки, или е умишлено прекъсване.

Цензура

Повечето западни държави не страдат от цензуриращи органи, но това не е така навсякъде по света. Държави като Куба и Китай имат създадени механизми, които блокират нежелано от правителството съдържание. Достъпът до „пропаганда“ е контролиран и е престъпление да се добива достъп до някои западни медии. Затова и потребители в тези части от света използват алтернативни начини за достъп до медийно съдържание от западни държави под риск за своята сигурност. Ситуацията е подобна и в много държави от Близкия изток. Китайската система е особено ефективна и често се нарича „The Great Firewall Of China“. В Русия интернет пространството също започва да бъде контролирано от 2012 г. насам. И социалните мрежи не са пренебрегвани от цензурата. Турция, Иран и Виетнам са само част от държавите, които активно блокират Youtube, Facebook и Twitter постоянно или временно. Доста пъти се е случвало да има протести в Истанбул и Анкара, тъй като достъпът до целия Youtube се ограничава често от страна на държавните власти.

След 2000 г. бързото развитие на мрежата предизвиква и нейното задължително присъствие в ежедневния живот. Традиционните медии като вестника и радиото започват да отстъпват в полза на новите електронни медии, а блоговете, личните сайтове и форумите се превръщат в новите площади, където хората изразяват мнението си. Информацията не само се събира в интернет, но и се създава от потребителите. Тази световна мрежа на споделянето експертите определят като Web 2.0 – новата еволюция на глобалната мрежа. С развитието на Web 2.0 се появяват все повече услуги и сайтове с обществено значение, например свободната енциклопедия Wikipedia. Популярността на социалните мрежи и тяхното развитие задминава малките локални интернет форуми и позволява на потребителите им да станат наистина глобални интернет граждани чрез споделянето на информация. С улесняването на достъпа до интернет производителите на потребителска електроника внедряват и интернет функционалност в своите устройства, което допълнително помага за изграждането на една истинска и глобална мрежа.

Следващата стъпка в развитието е преход към Web 3.0, който все още не е осъществен. Това ще е мрежата, в която интернет адресите ще бъдат свързани чрез семантични описания, мета данните ще са новите ключови думи в търсенето и по този начин ще се агрегира цялото интернет съдържание в една постоянно нарастваща и обновяваща се мрежа.
